| Chloramine is produced when a municipality injects both chlorine and ammonia simultaneously into the water supply. This is done to reduce free chlorine's ability to combine with organic matter in the water thereby producing potentially harmful trihalomethanes, or THMs. Because Chloramine has less disinfecting ability than free chlorine, a higher concentration of chlorine is usually used to get the same bacteria kill rate. Some shower filter dealers and distributors are claiming that their shower filter removes Chloramine, Leads and Heavy Metals and other specific contaminants. The filter media used may have some ability to remove these contaminants HOWEVER in the small amount of filtering media used and the rapid flow rate of shower water through a shower filter, this is not likely. A shower filters main purpose is to remove Chlorine from shower water, nothing else! If any shower filter makes claims about removing anything else then Chlorine then they MUST have had the Shower Filter itself Independently Tested to prove those other removal claims. Always ask for a copy of the test results if they make removal claims other than Chlorine. |
